Are You Too Old To Go Back To School?


 

You want to go back to school to continue your studies. Maybe you want to get your first degree, or maybe you want to get a new degree in a different field. You have always dreamed of that title, but you have been unable to believe that your dream can be realized because you think you are too old. 

It really is that simple. I don’t care about your age. As an experienced university-level educator, I can assure you that you will not be too old, because today there are many non-traditional students on university campuses (some of them may be older than you), your life Experience gives you many advantages over traditional students

 As the non-traditional population continues to grow, many universities have courses and services specifically designed for non-traditional students. I returned to school in my 30s, and today I am teaching at the university. Yes, there are many traditional students in my classroom, but I also have a large percentage of non-traditional students every semester.

 I have students who are 20 to 30, 40, 50 years old and above. I have students who withdrew from one profession halfway through and want to switch to another profession. My children (or grandsons) of students have left the nest and hope to enter a new stage of their lives. I also have many students who strike a balance between school and work and family. I have students of traditional age but in a non-traditional environment, including children and family, work and military service, sports and other activities. You are a unique person, but your situation is not as unique as you think. In many ways, your age, or rather your life experience, will be a great asset for you to return to school. 


Non-traditional students have a better understanding of how to manage time and prioritize tasks than traditional students. In addition, non-traditional students are generally more motivated and goal-oriented than traditional students. Finally, in understanding, applying or adapting to the new knowledge acquired through the university, your life experience also provides you with a wealth of knowledge and experience that you can learn from or learn from. I often see that my non-traditional students are better than traditional students in many ways, but in the end it comes down to the maturity of thinking and reasoning, and this maturity can only come with growth.

 I know that when I returned to university after a few years of work, I performed much better in class and handled my workload better than when I was a more traditional student.
